Position Summary / Department Summary The Surgical Clinical Reviewer collects, compiles, and submits reliable surgical data to the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP). The SCR ensures that all eligible surgeries performed at Boston Children’s Hospital are documented accurately and entered into the ACS NSQIP Pediatric database. This role works closely with the Senior Surgical Clinical Reviewer and members of the Department of Surgery to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects. The SCR plays a critical role in ensuring data integrity, supporting quality improvement initiatives, and providing educational support to clinical teams. Key Responsibilities Perform clinical review of surgical cases to support the hospital's participation in ACS NSQIP, identifying cases for inclusion in the Pediatric database using program inclusion and exclusion criteria and systematic sampling protocols. Collect preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data from hospital medical record systems Adhere to data management protocols to ensure timely and accurate entry, Work effectively with patients, families, and staff, establishing strong relationships across various surgical departments Maintain consistent follow-up on cases, contacting caregivers or families as needed to identify any postoperative occurrences or concerns. Disseminate NSQIP Pediatric data and analysis to appropriate surgical teams to support clinical quality improvement initiatives. Participate in ACS NSQIP continuing education opportunities, including educational calls, the annual ACS Quality Conference, and ongoing SCR competency assessments. Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree, preferably a Registered Nurse (RN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Experience Minimum of one year of experience in hospital surgery, surgical clinics, surgical clinical research, or medical records Clinical chart review and abstraction experience required Ability to build relationships, gain alignment for clinical support, and ask questions effectively to receive guidance from supervisors and peers Strong written and verbal communication skills Preferred Experience Database data entry and management experience Basic statistical knowledge Knowledge or experience in quality improvement or patient safety initiatives Licensure and Certifications ACS NSQIP SCR Training and Certification Program within six months of hire Certification and Registration preferred RHIA or RHIT Schedule 20 hours per week with flexible hours Training will be in person a few days a week until full trained Mandatory virtual meeting on Tuesdays 10 AM–12 PM • Once a month 7 AM meeting • Quarterly 4:30–5:30 PM meeting • Occasional full-day in-person meetings Boston Children’s Hospital offers competitive compensation and unmatched benefits including flexible schedules, affordable health, vision, and dental insurance, child care and student loan subsidies, generous time off, 403(b) retirement savings plan, pension, tuition and certain license and certification reimbursements, cell phone plan discounts, and discounted T-pass rates. The posted pay range is Boston Children’s reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting. Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
