Overview
The PRN Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) provides both direct and indirect nursing care to patients requiring emergency medical services. This role requires a thorough understanding of departmental and hospital policies related to the delivery of emergency care, ensuring safe, timely, and effective treatment. Strong interpretive, critical‑thinking, and problem‑solving skills are essential, as the position involves frequent interaction, collaboration, and consultation with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members.
This PRN role includes a commitment of one shift biweekly, one weekend per month, and coverage of one summer holiday and one winter holiday, supporting the dynamic needs of the Emergency Department while maintaining scheduling flexibility.
Responsibilities

Assessment & Prioritization
- Performs thorough patient assessments and determines priorities of care based on clinical presentation, risk factors, and urgency.
- Conducts risk assessments to identify potential complications and initiate appropriate interventions.

Specimen Collection & Processing
- Collects accurate and adequate blood and urine specimens using proper technique, equipment, and safety protocols.
- Correctly labels and processes specimens to ensure accuracy and traceability.
- Ensures timely delivery of specimens to the laboratory, coordinating courier services or specimen pickup with outside agencies as required.

Documentation & Communication
- Maintains clear, timely, and accurate documentation in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members, ensuring clarity and continuity of care.

Clinical Problem‑Solving
- Demonstrates strong problem‑solving skills by assessing situations, identifying issues, and implementing appropriate solutions in a timely manner.

Equipment Operation & Skill Proficiency
- Operates clinical and diagnostic equipment safely and competently, ensuring proper function and reporting any malfunction.
- Maintains proficiency in required clinical skills and adheres to established standards of practice.

Teamwork & Collaboration
- Works collaboratively within the healthcare team, promoting a positive, cooperative, and supportive work environment.
- Demonstrates initiative by anticipating patient and departmental needs and taking proactive steps to address them.
Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of Emergency Department or Critical Care experience required.
- Ability to perform CPR in accordance with current clinical standards.
- Completion of Baby Friendly Education within 6 months of hire.
- PALS certification required within 6 months of hire.
- TNCC certification required within 1 year of hire.
- EPIC Preferred
Credentials
- RN - Registered Nurse
- BLS - Basic Life Saving certification
- ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- NIH - Stroke Certification
Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing school
Entry
