**Summary** The Phlebotomist is responsible for blood specimen collection from patients of all ages in accordance with the department and hospital's safety policies and procedures. **Duties and Responsibilities** These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned. § Collect blood specimens from venous and capillary sites using approved equipment and procedures § Identify patients per established patient identification protocols § Utilize the laboratory and hospital computer systems to run and audit collection lists, sort the workload, and follow up on pending dispatch specimens § Accession blood and body fluid specimens by entering appropriate data into the computer and labeling per established protocols § Complete pre-analytical processing steps by centrifugation when appropriate and delivering specimens to the technical departments for testing § Process specimens for reference labs by centrifugation, aliquoting, and completing order entries § Utilize proper isolation techniques according to hospital policy § Utilize the Hospital Information System accurately while performing all functions assigned to this job classification § Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services § Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care **Education and Experience** Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or equivalent Experience: Recent working experience as a Phlebotomist is preferred, but will consider new graduates Certified as a Registered Phlebotomist (CPT), Medical Assistant, EMT or Paramedic preferred. BLS required.
