Overview
The Echo Technologist Lead assists the Director/Manager in the technical and operational oversight of the Echo Lab, ensuring efficient day-to-day operations and high-quality patient care. This role serves as a key resource for team members, supporting clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, and continuous performance improvement.
The Lead Echo Tech is responsible for coordinating workflow, maintaining accreditation standards, supporting staff development, and performing all clinical duties of an Echo Technologist.
Responsibilities
Operational & Technical Leadership
- Support daily operations of the Echo Lab, ensuring efficient workflow, productivity, and quality outcomes
- Assign staff responsibilities based on skill level and patient care needs to ensure safe coverage
- Maintain schedules, monitor staffing levels, and adjust as needed to meet patient volumes
- Oversee tracking of non-invasive procedures and department utilization
- Ensure proper maintenance of equipment, supplies, and inventory
Clinical Excellence
- Perform all echocardiography procedures in accordance with established protocols
- Maintain competency in all non-invasive echo (and/or vascular) studies
- Demonstrate proficiency in IV access, contrast administration, and IV removal
- Prepare, document, and administer IV contrast per departmental policies
- Ensure high standards of patient care, safety, and satisfaction
Quality, Compliance & Accreditation
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and regulatory standards
- Maintain adherence to ICAEL accreditation requirements
- Monitor quality control processes and address deficiencies proactively
- Participate in and support performance improvement initiatives, including PDCA cycles
- Establish and monitor productivity and quality benchmarks
Education & Staff Development
- Serve as a resource and mentor to team members and students
- Train and orient new hires; ensure completion of orientation checklists and competencies
- Ensure completion of annual mandatory education and competency validation
- Assist in developing departmental education programs and in-service training
- Collaborate with leadership and Medical Director on instructional course development
Leadership & Collaboration
- Provide feedback to leadership regarding staff performance, including coaching and development needs
- Assist with performance evaluations and disciplinary processes as needed
- Participate in the interview process and provide candidate feedback
- Act as a liaison between staff, physicians, and leadership to promote effective communication
- Support budget planning, including operational and capital needs
- Assist in planning for department design, workflow, and space utilization
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in echocardiography/cardiology
- Able to work under pressure and maintain patient confidentiality
- Ability to perform all non-invasive Echo studies or Vascular studies
- Competency in IV access, contrast administration and IV removal
Credentials
- ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologist) – Echo Tech
- BLS Certification – Basic Life Support through American Heart Association
