Job Description

The non-traditional pharmacy residency is a two year program that integrates the clinical pharmacist workflow with a PGY1 ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency. The resident will alternate every 5 weeks being on rotation versus working in the dispensing role. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: medication order processing within established policies, procedures and guidelines and providing drug information while applying a thorough understanding and knowledge of drug and medical therapy. As a resident this individual will serve as Shift Team Leader, be cross-trained in multiple areas, have longitudinal projects (MUE, DCR, research project), have an on-call component, rotate every other 5 weeks through clinical rotations, serve as primary preceptor for 1-2 APPE pharmacy students, and other requirements as indicated and required in the pharmacy resident manual. After completion of 2 year program, resident may re-enter as a Clinical Pharmacist I or be considered for Clinical Pharmacist II.,Minimum Education Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Completion of a four year pharmacy program in an accredited college of pharmacy. (Required) Minimum Work Experience 0 years At least 6 months of pharmacy experience within Children’s National (Required) Required Licenses and Certifications Pharmacist District of Columbia (Required) Functional Accountabilities Medication Processing Interpret medication orders, profile orders and oversee the packaging, labeling and distribution of medications Drug Intervention and Education Perform drug therapy monitoring and intervene as necessary on drug dosing, drug administration, drug interactions, side-effects and monitoring issues; complete therapeutic drug monitoring consults and adverse drug reaction reports as assigned. Document all interventions in intervention software and all notes in patient chart. Provide accurate and timely drug information to physicians, nurses and other health professionals. Provide education to all caregivers (physicians, nurses, ancillary staff, and pharmacy residents, students, and team members) Supervision/Training Oversee the work of Pharmacy Technicians by directing and assisting as necessary to ensure rapid medication order turn-around time. Precept pharmacy students Become a trainer in at least one area of the department for onboarding of new employees Serve as Shift Team Lead while staffing Quality Improvement Participate in cost-savings initiatives within the department Within residency program, complete MUE, DCR, and major project as well as a follow-up MUE Contribute to the development of order sets by helping devise, implement, and test electronic order set builds Professional Development Research project Attend, present, and/or moderate at subject area conferences, as available Actively engage in preceptor development Participate in the PGY1 program Distributive Role Cross-train in at least one satellite pharmacy area Fulfill assigned tasks for scheduled role each day and be present for entire shift Organizational Accountabilities Organizational Accountabilities (Staff) Organizational Commitment/Identification Anticipate and responds to customer needs; follows up until needs are met Teamwork/Communication Demonstrate collaborative and respectful behavior Partner with all team members to achieve goals Receptive to others’ ideas and opinions Performance Improvement/Problem-solving Contribute to a positive work environment Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to change Identify opportunities to improve clinical and administrative processes Make appropriate decisions, using sound judgment Cost Management/Financial Responsibility Use resources efficiently Search for less costly ways of doing things Safety Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation Stop in the face of uncertainty and takes time to resolve the situation Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co-workers Attend carefully to important details - practicing Stop, Think, Act and Review in order to self-check behavior and performance
