Job Description
Under general supervision, reviews medical charts to ensure anesthesia requirements are met for surgical and procedural patients. Education: Associate's degree from an accredited School of Nursing required; BSN preferred. Must complete BSN within 3 years of hire date. Licensures/Certifications: • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses as a Registered Nurse. • Completion of "Healthcare Provider" CPR course, bi-annually. Experience: PACU/Pre-op or Pre-admission testing experience preferred. Previous perioperative and/or procedural nursing experience preferred. Skills: • Interpersonal communication (oral and written) skills required in order to educate, comfort and interview patients and their families, maintain effective contacts with a variety of hospital personnel, and maintain appropriate documentation records. • Ability to develop professional working relationships with anesthesiologists, surgeons, surgeon office staff and all other hospital personnel in order to complete Pre-Anesthesia evaluation, education and assessment. • Ability to review complex patient charts • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail, including during stressful situations. • Demonstrates satisfactory performance for established procedures and skills. Learns new routines quickly. Adheres to established standards. • Advocate for patient needs and ensure they received appropriate resources including education and coordinating diagnostic tests and procedures. • Assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives related to patient care. • Work closely with gastroenterologists, health care providers, other specialists. • GI practice personnel to ensure seamless patient care. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Utilization of Nursing Process A. Assessment. 1. Reviews the patient medical charts, verifies all required test results, H&P, and nursing documentation are complete in preparation for surgical procedure. 2. Determines priorities for patient care needs or problems. 3. Receives results of lab, EKG, x-rays, etc on patients and places all reports in charts, preventing delays, cancellations and medico-legal complications due to missing information 4. Identify and address obstacles to timely and quality patient care using critical thinking skills 5. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care for patient populations served 6. Reassesses the patient as indicated by changes in condition and/ or response to treatment(s) B. Planning. 1. Coordinates patient, family, significant other, and health team members in ensuring that surgical patients are prepared for surgery according to Anesthesia Guidelines. 2. Responsible for patient pre-certification according to departmental and interdepartmental policies and procedures while adhering to the patient-focused admission process C. Implementation. 1. Initiates appropriate emergency procedures as necessary. 2. Verbally communicates the patient's status to nurse practitioners. 3. Communicates (both face to face and via telephone communication) in a therapeutic manner with the patient, family and all PTC “customers.” 4. Applies teaching/learning principles in education of patient and family. D. Patient Care Coordination 1. Coordinates patient activities with other disciplines. 2. Partner alongside surgical teams to ensure that patients receive the best possible care E. Teaching and Quality Improvement 1. Participates in established patient, family, staff and/or student education program. 2. Participates in clinical monitoring at the unit level. 3. Provides the necessary and appropriate education to the patient and family from admission through discharge 4. Identifies unit, staff and patient care problems.
