Job Description

The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) supports a team of genetic counselors within the Maternal ‑ Fetal Medicine division by performing administrative, clinical support, and coordination tasks that enhance patient care and departmental efficiency. Under the supervision of a Board ‑ Certified/Board ‑ Eligible Genetic Counselor or the Chief of Maternal ‑ Fetal Medicine, the GCA manages documentation, processes referrals, assists with insurance authorizations, supports communication with genetic testing laboratories, and facilitates patient communication regarding testing and results. The GCA is also responsible for data entry, supply management, and preparation of patient education materials. This role offers the opportunity to shadow reproductive genetic counselors to gain exposure to the field of genetic counseling. All duties must be completed with accuracy, confidentiality, professionalism, and adherence to departmental policies.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: High School Diploma or GED Certification Phlebotomy Work Experience and Additional Information A recent undergraduate or a current student in an undergraduate program. Coursework, experience, and interest in genetics are a plus Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Foundational understanding of medical terminology and familiarity with clinical workflows to support genetic counseling tasks and documentation requirements. Ability to use databases, electronic medical records, word processing, and spreadsheet software to manage patient information, track results, and prepare documentation. High level of accuracy in reviewing referrals, entering data, preparing letters, processing authorizations, and handling sensitive patient information. Commitment to maintaining patient privacy and safeguarding sensitive genetic and medical information in compliance with HIPAA and departmental standards. Ability to complete assigned tasks efficiently with minimal supervision, while also functioning effectively as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team. Skill in responding professionally to patient inquiries, coordinating with genetic testing laboratories, and seeking guidance from appropriate staff when issues arise.
