**SUMMARY:**

The Student Nurse Associate (SNA) works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) to enhance the development and acquisition of nursing knowledge and skills. The SNA provides patient care and assists the RN in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care to selected patients. The level of skills and assessments performed is directly related to the nursing education level of the SNA with SNA I defined as between sophomore and junior years and SNA II between junior and senior years.

**PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** :

* Performs therapeutic patient care measures under the supervision of the RN within the scope of the SNA competency list
* Provides safe care to meet the needs of the patients served
* Assists the RN in assigning, planning, implementing and evaluating care to selected patients
* Maintains a safe physical and emotional patient environment
* Communicates patient care concerns to responsible RN
* Documents care provided in the medical record

**ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:**

* Performs physical care for patients (SNA I, II)
* Performs nursing care and procedures requiring sterile technique and asepsis (SNA I, II)
* Conducts patient assessments with RN (SNA 1); independently (SNA II)
* Plans, delivers and evaluates nursing care for a 3 to 5 patient assignment under supervision of RN (SNA II)
* Admits and discharges patients under RN supervision (SNA II)
* Reviews patient data to identify potential risk and safety issues (SNA II)

**REPORTS TO:** Clinical Director, Inpatient Services

**SUPERVISES: **

**INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:**

**QUALIFICATIONS:**

* Current enrollment in a baccalaureate nursing program at an accredited school of nursing with a GPA of at least 3.0
* Completion of at least one clinical rotation
* Completion of nursing fundamentals course with a minimum final score of a B
* Fundamental skills lab completion with a minimum final score of a B
* Current AHA basic life support certification
