Job Description

Position Summary
Under general direction, protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. Prevents illness and injury. Alleviates suffering through the diagnosis and treatment. Advocates for patients and their families. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.
Position Responsibilities
Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
Administers chemotherapy agents according to organizational policy and procedures.
Cares for patients receiving implantable radiation therapy following organizational policy and procedures regarding radiation safety.
Monitors and manages the effects of cancer and cancer treatment
Assesses patients who are at high risk for signs and symptoms of oncologic emergencies
Creates and enhances a positive environment that maintain a climate of dignity, privacy and respect for patients with cancer
Educates patients, families, and the community about cancer risk, screening, and early detection
Uses age-appropriate learning principles in patient, family, and caregiver education
Facilitates transitions between healthcare settings to provide continuity of care
Coordinates palliative and end-of-life care in collaboration with patients, family and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team
Establishes caring relationships with patients, families, and other caregivers to facilitate coping and provide support. Documents per organizational guidelines.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Required Qualifications
(Including any licensure, certification, education):
Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing or has active multistate license approved by the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Achievement of Baccalaureate degree in nursing within 6 years of hire if hired after January 1, 2014.
Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
Organizational Requirements:
Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
Professional certification in nursing specialty.
Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course Completion within one year of hire.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Proficient in communication skills.
Ability to pursue and foster a sense of team and partnership across all disciplines.
Ability to communicate effectively, in English, with diverse population groups.
Ability to be self-directed, flexible, and able to adapt to change.
Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and tactful manner with physicians, staff, patients and/or their representatives.
Ability to read and understand chart documentation.
Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.
Ability to read, write and understand the English language.
