JOB SUMMARY
:
The RN renders collaborative nursing care via the defined department Method of Practice, to a caseload of patients for an assigned shift in accordance to the medical staff practitioner’s treatment plan, nursing standards of care/practice and professional code of ethics. The RN is committed to promoting the health potential of the patient (body-mind-spirit) through the implementation of the nursing process. Demonstrates ability to delegate appropriately and direct staff in the coordination and delivery of care; assumes responsibility for the appropriate utilization of care resources; demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with others in problem resolution, is sensitive to the needs of patients, families, and fellow employees.
JOB

RELATIONSHIPS
:
Reports directly to Perinatal Nurse Manager.
Reports indirectly to the Director of Inpatient Services and other management covering the department.
Collaborates with all members of the Health Care Team in the coordination of patient care.
Delegates and directs assigned caseload team which may be comprised of LVN/Department Clerk.

Performs direct patient care in accordance to performance standards listed on Skills checklist according to the defined patient populations for Perinatal patients
Perform admission, discharge, and transfer procedures
Communicate to provide continuity of care and to deliver safe care. Uses SBAR.
Administers medications and has knowledge of actions, route of administration, dosage, and side effects
Demonstrates appropriate patient safety practices
Meets the standards of care for Antepartum Testing/Triage patient including, MSE: Medical Screening Exam, Non Stress Tests, Sterile Vag Exam, Testing for Rupture of Membranes, and IV Therapy
Meets the standards of care for Labor, Delivery and Recovery of patients including, accurately interpreting fetal heart monitor tracings, Pain Management, assist with Epidural placement and monitoring, assist with Rupture of Membranes, Foley Catheter Insertion, FSE, IUPC, assist with Vag Delivery, follows current standards regarding postpartum hemorrhage and hypertensive crisis, Emergency Delivery and Safe recovery of mom and baby
Meets the standards of care for postpartum patients including, pain management, lochia assessment, fundal massage, ambulation, post op care, postpartum complications: blood transfusions, DVT assessment and follows current standards regarding postpartum hemorrhage and hypertensive crisis
Meets the standards of care for the breastfeeding couplet including, provides appropriate lactation education, breastfeeding assistance and support: latch and position, appropriate referrals: lactation consultant
Meets the standards of care for the newborn patient including, newborn assessment, newborn medications, blood glucose monitoring protocol, hearing screen, newborn screen, jaundice screening and CCHD
Meets the standards of care for the Peds-Neo patient including, infant stabilization/NRP, phototherapy, newborn IV starts/IV administration, IV antibiotics, newborn medications, infant transfers to higher level of care
Meets the standards of care for Documentation:
Communications with other health care professionals regarding the patient
Communication with and education of the patient and support person
For shift worked, coordinates case load of patients as assigned
Delegates and directs care delivery appropriately
Coordinates care effectively
Signs off coordination of the LVN, orientee, floated RN, patient load at the end of the shift.
Contributes to the case management discharge plan of care
Serves as a preceptor to students, volunteers, and staff as assigned
Participates in the development and achievement of department annual goals and objectives (action plans) in accordance with Nursing Services / NIHD goals and overall plan for patient care.
Supports the implementation of action plans
Adapts to changes
Performs other duties as assigned
Oversees and provides feedback on work performance of the shift staff and other members of the health care team and provides feedback to the Nurse Manager, DON, and/or House Supervisor
Functions as the RN caseload primary nurse on assigned patient load
Demonstrates leadership skills and completes cross training to:
Cross trains to other positions and/or departments listed
Complies with departmental staffing practices.
Understands the need to verify final schedule on a regular basis in the scheduling software
Able to use scheduling software for requesting time off, swapping shifts, picking up open shifts etc.
Active on selected committees for the purpose of exchanging information and participating in problem solving methods.
Attends monthly staff meetings and/or signs off minutes as read
Participates on standing committees (Professional Practice Committee, OCC, CCOC, SIAC, Patient Safe Handling, Resuscitation Committee)
Arranges own knowledge base and development by attending formal and informal educational activities.
Completes NIHD mandatory competency.
Completes annual role specific on-going competency plan.
Attends NIHD in-services and/or programs
Completes job skills BLS, NRP, Lactation educator
Assists in identifying patient care problems for investigation, collecting data and applying current concepts to patient care. Has knowledge of Problem Resolution Methods (FOCUS-PDSA, 5S, Six Sigma, Rapid Improvement Cycle, Project Management) and actively participates in QA/PI activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
One-year labor experience required or completed extended orientation period, up to a year, meeting all expectations for no labor experience. A nurse with no labor experience can be hired by the Perinatal nurse manager based on current preceptor/orientation availability.


Education:
Graduate of School of Nursing
Certification:
Current California State License as a Registered Nurse required
BLS upon hire and on-going
NRP prior to completion of orientation period.
Intermediate or Advanced Fetal monitoring certification within 6 months of hire and ongoing.
Gnosis annual assessment of EFM principles within 3 months of hire and on-going
BFHI (Baby-Friendly) Lactation Education required or within 6 months of hire
